Why My Apps Use Dynamic Splash Screens

When you open a language learning app, you usually see a static logo. It flashes for a few seconds, and then you start your lesson. When I built Shadow Chinese and Love Canton 話, I wanted the very first second of the user experience to feel like something more. My apps feature dynamic splash screens that change every single time you load them up. I wanted it to feel like the start of a journey.

A Fresh Visual Journey with Every Launch

Every time a user opens Shadow Chinese or Love Canton 話, they are greeted by a completely different, beautifully curated photograph. In Shadow Chinese, one moment it might be a peaceful river scene in Su Zhou, and the next, it could be historic landmarks in Macau.

In Love Canton 話, this time is the breathtaking skyline of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, and the next time is the Big Buddha on Lantau Island.

I deliberately chose a rotating gallery of multiple pictures spanning mainland China and Hong Kong. By varying the visuals upon every launch, the app feels alive, unpredictable, and deeply connected to the real world.

Moving Beyond Words to Build a Connection

Language does not exist in a vacuum. It is deeply tied to culture, geography, and daily life. Through these changing splash screens, I want to give users the distinct feeling that they are stepping off a plane and visiting China or Hong Kong in person.

By showing the immense beauty, rich traditions, and modern energy of these places, I aim to spark a genuine love for the regions. I want learners to fall in love with the sights of China and Hong Kong before they even practice their first phrase of Mandarin or Cantonese.

Fuelling the Passion to Learn

Why go through all this effort for a screen that only lasts a few seconds? Because passion drives consistency.

Learning a new language—especially languages as rich as Chinese and Cantonese—takes time and dedication. When students feel a strong emotional bond to a place, their passion skyrockets. Seeing a beautiful cultural landmark or a bustling city scene reminds users why they are studying. It transforms language learning from a daily chore into an exciting gateway to a culture they want to explore. I hope that every splash screen brings users a little closer to the heart of the Chinese and Cantonese-speaking worlds, keeping their passion burning bright all the way to fluency.
